Are you considering investing in a new roof than this podcast is for you.

Speaker:

Welcome to the Houston roofer podcast, where we take a deep dive into the

Speaker:

roofing industry and provide you with the latest industry trends, informative

Speaker:

interviews, answer all of your roofing questions and provide a buyer's

Speaker:

guide for your next roofing project.

Speaker:

So that you can be confident in the decision that you're

Speaker:

making now, here's your host.

Speaker:

So Laura, in this episode, I think it's gonna be really great

Speaker:

to educate our audience about what it's like to get a roof.

Speaker:

That's also luxury to match the aesthetic of a beautiful river Oaks mansion, having

Speaker:

a beautiful garden and landscape, and also to dive into what some of the most

Speaker:

popular trends are that you're seeing out.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

So with river Oaks, we do a lot of business around there.

Speaker:

Our office is very close, so we, we have.

Speaker:

A big networking and following out there.

Speaker:

So we're very familiar with the aesthetic and high quality of river Oaks.

Speaker:

So, you know, they have anywhere from metal standing, sea to metal shingles,

Speaker:

tiles, slate, Cedar shake, which looks like live edge wood though.

Speaker:

It's all up there.

Speaker:

And you know, there are a ton of homes out there.

Speaker:

In that area that haven't gotten that update yet and are still, you

Speaker:

know, sporting the original roof.

Speaker:

So you can find it all out there.

Speaker:

And I can't wait to talk a little bit more about it.

Speaker:

So, Laura, have you seen that episode of fixer upper, where there was

Speaker:

that beautiful Spanish barrel tile?

Speaker:

Yes, I did actually.

Speaker:

so tell me, tell me your thoughts on that, because I know that so

Speaker:

many people have been so fascinated and they've been asking about that.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

So as a company sell a product called Brava and it's a synthetic.

Speaker:

So it just means it's made of modified polymers that are bonded together

Speaker:

to make a very solid structure and.

Speaker:

We have that entire Cedar and slate form.

Speaker:

And it's just this product that's out that is really wowing clients of the

Speaker:

realistic qualities that it has, whether it's color texture, but you don't run into

Speaker:

the same problems as an actual slate roof or an actual wood roof, or the clay tile.

Speaker:

and when that show aired and that episode aired, they featured that

Speaker:

synthetic Spanish barrel tile on there.

Speaker:

And it got millions of followers.

Speaker:

I mean, millions of people watched that show and it got everybody going.

Speaker:

What is that?

Speaker:

I, I didn't know.

Speaker:

I had options.

Speaker:

So it kind of sparked this new found interest in synthetics.

Speaker:

Thank you for sharing that.

Speaker:

And you know, we actually just recorded another episode about that with Joel.

Speaker:

So we're gonna link that in the show notes here as well.

Speaker:

So Laura, a Spanish barrel tile roof, right?

Speaker:

When you look at one of these and you're driving down the beautiful streets

Speaker:

of river Oaks, and you see the tall Palm trees and beautiful greenery,

Speaker:

what is it about that that people notice from five blocks away even?

Speaker:

And how does it stand out amongst everything else?

Speaker:

That's on the same block or.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

So that's really where it's at.

Speaker:

When you're looking at luxury roofs, that's 99% of the time.

Speaker:

What the homeowner's going for is a statement piece is intertwining

Speaker:

their roof with their landscaping and the feel of their home.

Speaker:

And you know, we're about to install a.

Speaker:

Luxury Brava Spanish barrel tile on a home, in a gated community in Montgomery.

Speaker:

And they are the most unique home on the lake.

Speaker:

And she did it for that reason.

Speaker:

She said she wanted a Tuscany, almost, uh, Spanish.

Speaker:

Feel to her home and none of the homes out there look that way.

Speaker:

They look like lake homes and they have a, you know, traditional colonial

Speaker:

style, which is absolutely fine.

Speaker:

And luckily Spanish barrel tile looks great on every home, but she said,

Speaker:

you know, everybody in my home just has the regular clay tile roofs.

Speaker:

And she did her research and she contacted me and personally, and

Speaker:

said, I wanna put on this product.

Speaker:

This is amazing.

Speaker:

No one else in my neighborhood is going to have this.

Speaker:

Nobody in this whole community is gonna have this.

Speaker:

I'm gonna be the talk of the town.

Speaker:

And there's no shame in that.

Speaker:

There's a lot of investment in your home and it's really, it's

Speaker:

a good feeling to know one.

Speaker:

You call it home.

Speaker:

It feels like home for you, but that's on the inside, you know?

Speaker:

And then the outside, everybody else gets to enjoy that gets to enjoy the

Speaker:

very expensive landscaping and the expensive exterior paint job and the

Speaker:

expensive rot, iron gates and the expensive shutters and everything.

Speaker:

And it just always seems like the roof is such an afterthought

Speaker:

or, oh, we'll get to that.

Speaker:

And when, in reality, You work your eyes from the ground all the way

Speaker:

up to the roof and you kind of lose people when you get to the roof.

Speaker:

If it's got a 30 year old kind of algae covered shingle on there, that just,

Speaker:

it almost looks like such a sore thumb.

Speaker:

You go, oh, that's great.

Speaker:

That's great.

Speaker:

Oh, you lost me there.

Speaker:

So when going through river Oaks and seeing that diversity in the

Speaker:

roofs, it's almost kind of, it almost sticks out a little bit more if your.

Speaker:

Isn't one of those luxury roofs, which in all honesty, I think asphalt

Speaker:

roofs are beautiful in themselves.

Speaker:

They have their own look, your home can actually accommodate that.

Speaker:

And depending on the color, that can be the statement piece as well.

Speaker:

But with grander decoration decor, I guess you'd say the landscaping as well.

Speaker:

It fits so well together.

Speaker:

So that Spanish barrel tile is such a statement piece and it really.

Speaker:

Is a show stopper, I think.

Speaker:

And especially with the bold colors that you can put on it.

Speaker:

And that's really what a lot of people go for.

Speaker:

So they'll get either neutral tones on their home and get

Speaker:

a red roof or vice versa.

Speaker:

You know, they'll have a very bold home and get a brown clay tile, you know, just.

Speaker:

Something to contrast and then also make your eye jump to and go, wow.

Speaker:

That looks incredible.

Speaker:

And geometrically, it's really fascinating to stare out to the eye.

Speaker:

Same with the Cedar shake.

Speaker:

Same with the slate.

Speaker:

You wanna stare at it and examine it and go, what is going on up there?

Speaker:

It's a lot.

Speaker:

And I like it.

Speaker:

Yeah, absolutely.

Speaker:

And I think you said something really interesting, right?

Speaker:

It's that people are looking at it, not just from the inside, they're looking

Speaker:

at it, especially when they're outdoors.

Speaker:

And when you think about Houston and river Oaks and just the weather, right?

Speaker:

I mean, Houston is a city where year round, the weather's pretty mild.

Speaker:

So people do spend a lot of time in their backyard.

Speaker:

They may have a pool.

Speaker:

They may have a whole area for entertaining and having parties outdoors.

Speaker:

And I think that that's the other beauty of it is if someone is in your big,

Speaker:

beautiful, massive backyard in river Oaks, they're going to see that roof

Speaker:

and they're going to be admiring it.

Speaker:

And it literally will just be one of those things where their eyes are

Speaker:

drawn to the roof and they're drawn all the way around to the entire house

Speaker:

because of how, you know, interesting and dynamic the shape is, the color

Speaker:

is and, and how it just stands out.

Speaker:

And it almost reminds me a lot of like that Hollywood glamor and,

Speaker:

you know, Beverly Hill style.

Speaker:

What are your thoughts?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

So with river Oaks, there's so much traffic on the streets, not just cars.

Speaker:

So everybody walks their dogs.

Speaker:

I mean, everybody, it's just such a great neighborhood.

Speaker:

There's a lot of, you know, tree shade.

Speaker:

So whenever it is hot, it's pretty bearable.

Speaker:

And also families are going on, walks together.

Speaker:

It.

Speaker:

It's such a great feel and everybody wants to be outside and this nice community.

Speaker:

I mean, it's and river Oaks is huge and it just doesn't matter what street you go on.

Speaker:

There's there's that great vibe there of community and sharing in each

Speaker:

other's, you know, love for their properties because everybody does,

Speaker:

they, they take the time they take the effort, they do their research.

Speaker:

They hire only the best to.

Speaker:

Really invest in what they work so hard for every day.

Speaker:

And that's what the homeowner wants to invest in.

Speaker:

And I am always so prideful and proud, I guess you would say every time we get

Speaker:

to install one of these luxuries roofs, because I know the listeners listening.

Speaker:

No.

Speaker:

How much effort it takes to really set your sites on something, especially with

Speaker:

a dollar sign on it, especially something that's a little harder to attain.

Speaker:

It's, it's a very high end product.

Speaker:

It's not cheap, but setting those goals, saving up for it, working towards it,

Speaker:

and then being able to achieve that and seeing that finished product, when

Speaker:

we get to look at the clients after everything's done and they're just

Speaker:

like, yeah, it was completely worth it.

Speaker:

And more it's icing on the cake.

Speaker:

Oh, absolutely.

Speaker:

I think that it's something that's gonna bring so much joy

Speaker:

for years and years to come.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

So we talked about the Spanish barrel tile roofs for river Oaks in terms of it

Speaker:

being one of the most luxurious roofs, that river Oaks, homeowners really

Speaker:

fur, and also Laura, I'd love for you to share what other type of roofs are

Speaker:

popular in the river Oaks community.

Speaker:

So along with that.

Speaker:

So the brand that we use and love the research that was done on

Speaker:

this, the team that we work with at Brava, it's a very well ran company.

Speaker:

Very amazing product that we love to stand behind.

Speaker:

I can't wait.

Speaker:

Until we're ready to change the roof on our personal home, because it will be a

Speaker:

bra roof, the products that they produce.

Speaker:

So they do have this, the Bravo Spanish barrel tile, which

Speaker:

is what they're known for.

Speaker:

It is a synthetic, it's a one piece construction.

Speaker:

So when you put it on the roof, there's no cracking chipping, like

Speaker:

you're used to with clay tile, you can't walk on a clay tile.

Speaker:

And then you get tree limbs that fall hail storms, any type of

Speaker:

impact, and there's that crack.

Speaker:

And then it ends up being a ripple effect.

Speaker:

And it's just, it's such low maintenance because it's that one

Speaker:

piece construction and then there's an interlocking system on it.

Speaker:

And I'm not sure if we'll provide some information.

Speaker:

I'm sure we will about maybe the installation process works or how the

Speaker:

samples are put together, but it's really.

Speaker:

And I think it's as he's patented and going further on that, they took that

Speaker:

into what's another luxury item that people just have a hard time, one getting

Speaker:

in general and two issues with cracking wear and tear algae build up all that.

Speaker:

And they recreated a synthetic slate, which is.

Speaker:

The look of a slate stone and with live edges on 'em.

Speaker:

So it has that layered kind of almost scalloped look, they have rounded square

Speaker:

edges, beautiful, beautiful product, but it's very, very, very heavy.

Speaker:

All of these are, if you get the actual product, the clay or the

Speaker:

slate, or even the Cedar shape, that's the wood that I'm getting into, but

Speaker:

they're very, very, very, very heavy.

Speaker:

So to touch on.

Speaker:

And with all three products, if you currently have a shingled roof and

Speaker:

you're like, I wanna do the upgrade.

Speaker:

I, I don't want my asphalt roof anymore.

Speaker:

My composition Shing.

Speaker:

I want slate.

Speaker:

Let's say you don't have to reinforce the rafting in your home because the weight

Speaker:

of the slate, Cedar and tile is equivalent and in the same range as an asphalt

Speaker:

shingle, and a lot of people go well, is it, you know, gonna fly off my roof?

Speaker:

Well, it's not a feather, but it weighs the same amount as an asphalt shingle.

Speaker:

Even has tripled the enforcement, no matter what style you put in,

Speaker:

but I think that's just such a green light for the homeowner when

Speaker:

they're looking at these options.

Speaker:

Oh, I want slate.

Speaker:

I'm not sure about synthetic.

Speaker:

There's a big problem that you get to avoid instantly right off the cuff.

Speaker:

You don't have to pay for extra framework and raffing

Speaker:

and reinforcement in your home.

Speaker:

And it's just a more seamless process we can tear off and put right back.

Speaker:

There's no wait time, you know, for all of that, to let you know

Speaker:

the slate, whenever you install.

Speaker:

You actually put it on the Ridge or the top part of the home across every slope.

Speaker:

And you'll start to notice this now all the, all the listeners will notice this.

Speaker:

Now, whenever you're driving, you see that you'll see stacks of slate or

Speaker:

tile or Cedar shake just sitting there.

Speaker:

And they do that to help bring in the, the new rafting and let it settle

Speaker:

before they actually install because they have to make sure everything.

Speaker:

Correctly enforced.

Speaker:

And there's just a lot that goes onto it and we get to skip all that

Speaker:

because you don't need to do it.

Speaker:

So the other, you know, two installs the Cedar shake and the slate.

Speaker:

I'm such a big fan.

Speaker:

We did just finish a really cool gazebo in this, this gentleman's backyard.

Speaker:

It just.

Speaker:

Brought his backyard to life.

Speaker:

He spends a ton of time out there doing landscaping.

Speaker:

He has it professionally done.

Speaker:

He knows every single plant that's back there.

Speaker:

There's gotta be no joke, 50 plus different types of plants out there.

Speaker:

And it is such a great centerpiece and welcoming piece and it ties

Speaker:

everything together and it just makes everything make sense.

Speaker:

And it's one of the cooler things about these products is

Speaker:

what it can do for the home.

Speaker:

Even if it's as small as a gaze.

Speaker:

I absolutely love the placebo idea because when you think about it summertime,

Speaker:

and think about the beauty of that.

Speaker:

And when your children are playing outside, maybe you have a new puppy.

Speaker:

Maybe you wanna capture those special moments.

Speaker:

You know, if your puppy playing, you know, in your placebo.

Speaker:

And I think.

Speaker:

, those are the things that really matter when it comes to being a homeowner,

Speaker:

having a family is you wanna make memories in your home and you wanna make,

Speaker:

you know, memories that your children are gonna remember when they grow up.

Speaker:

And I think when you have a roof, that's beautiful.

Speaker:

and they are in the backyard and they're playing basketball or

Speaker:

they're playing in the swimming pool.

Speaker:

Their eye is naturally gonna be drawn upward.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Cuz they're gonna look at the sky if it looks cloudy or if the sky's

Speaker:

really beautiful and as they're raising their, their level to look

Speaker:

up, they're gonna remember what that house looked like when they grow up.

Speaker:

They're gonna remember.

Speaker:

Oh, our roof was a reddish color.

Speaker:

And again, like they're gonna be able to have these memories that are so unique.

Speaker:

And I think that you have to think about having a roof as

Speaker:

part of like your lifestyle too.

Speaker:

Like, does it fit into the lifestyle that you're creating for yourself, for your

Speaker:

family, for your business, for everything?

Speaker:

and I think that, you know, for river Oaks, I mean, when you talk about luxury

Speaker:

market, the people that are investing, you know, a lot of money into their home, into

Speaker:

what they're putting inside of their home.

Speaker:

Obviously they want to care about what it looks like on the outside too.

Speaker:

I would also say it's, it's very much like art, right.

Speaker:

And a beautiful.

Speaker:

Is just like art, right?

Speaker:

You can appreciate different colors you can pick from and the styles.

Speaker:

And, and maybe you can talk to our audience a little bit about if they

Speaker:

want something really unique, right.

Speaker:

They want something that no one else really has something like that

Speaker:

in their area or on their block.

Speaker:

That really is gonna stand out.

Speaker:

How can they get a roof that is luxurious?

Speaker:

and unique.

Speaker:

How can they customize it?

Speaker:

Laura?

Speaker:

There's a lot of different styles.

Speaker:

So you can do the tile.

Speaker:

You can do the Cedar shake.

Speaker:

You can do the slate.

Speaker:

I mean, we haven't even really touched on metal shingles, metal shingles have their

Speaker:

own version of live edge wood, Cedar shake or slate, or just shingles in general.

Speaker:

And they have a.

Speaker:

Layering effect.

Speaker:

There's all sorts of colors.

Speaker:

You can put on a metal roof, which is really fun to play with.

Speaker:

We did one that had gold copper accents on everything, and the shingle

Speaker:

itself was kind of like a brownish.

Speaker:

With some gold hints in it.

Speaker:

It was incredible.

Speaker:

That was in a gated lake subdivision and everyone in that

Speaker:

community, it was on a golf course.

Speaker:

Everybody at the golf course was talking about it.

Speaker:

Everybody in the community center was talking about it.

Speaker:

And it was really a show stopper.

Speaker:

So being able to choose from different actual textiles, your color patterns, a

Speaker:

lot of them have like a marbled effect.

Speaker:

You can contrast the colors.

Speaker:

I think that's giving you a ton of different ways to really customize it.

Speaker:

And like you said, it's art, you know, a roof when people.

Speaker:

Start to talk about a roof.

Speaker:

It's, it's not the most glamorous thing.

Speaker:

People think, you know, just big construction.

Speaker:

I need to have one.

Speaker:

I already have one and it's always, you know, starts off kind of like

Speaker:

an eh, feeling, but then you do this research and it's just so great.

Speaker:

We've got a phone in our hands at all times.

Speaker:

It gives us research to the entire world.

Speaker:

We can look up all these different types of installs

Speaker:

and all these different brands.

Speaker:

You can, you know, compare, look at the reviews, check out the videos

Speaker:

of installations, all the, all these things, all these different resources,

Speaker:

and really come to a conclusion of what speaks to you and what makes you happy.

Speaker:

That's what I love is when you really.

Speaker:

Thought into anything and customize it to where you go.

Speaker:

Yeah, that's me.

Speaker:

I really love this.

Speaker:

This makes me happy.

Speaker:

Cuz when it comes down to it, it's your home.

Speaker:

And when you drive home from your long day at work or get off the 10th zoom

Speaker:

meeting you had for the day and walk outside, you get to look at this home

Speaker:

that you've invested your time and you know, you're hard earned hours.

Speaker:

It gets, you know, translated into this beautiful roof.

Speaker:

And there's nothing more pleasing than that type of accomplishment that you

Speaker:

know is gonna be a lifelong investment.

Speaker:

These are lifelong installs.

Speaker:

They're gonna outlive you.

Speaker:

You can give it to your children, relatives, friends sell the home.

Speaker:

It's great for resale value because it.

Speaker:

Never gonna need to be replaced.

Speaker:

These are lifelong installs.

Speaker:

So I love the aspect of touching back on that you get the different

Speaker:

textiles, the different colors, and at the end of the day, it's your choice.

Speaker:

And you get to be really proud about what you put on that roof.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

You know what you exactly tapped into what I was looking for.

Speaker:

Is that whole customization piece of like mixing, you know,

Speaker:

different colors together to really get that unique masterpiece.

Speaker:

You know, it doesn't have to be all just one type, right.

Speaker:

It can be okay, you wanna have the gold and you wanna have like another version.

Speaker:

And, and I think that's the beauty of it in this home that

Speaker:

you just mentioned as well.

Speaker:

That's the beauty of it is that you can make it your own.

Speaker:

You can customize it.

Speaker:

You can really, you know, put your own spin on it.

Speaker:

It doesn't have to look like every other roof on the block.

Speaker:

You can have the roof where it's like, you know what?

Speaker:

This matches my personality.

Speaker:

And if your personality is a bit more eccentric, your style is

Speaker:

a bit more bold, then why not?

Speaker:

Your roof should also be a bit more bold.

Speaker:

And, and if you know, your style is more sophisticated.

Speaker:

You can have something that's sophisticated.

Speaker:

You guys can reach out to Laura and you can, have a free consultation and you

Speaker:

can talk to her about your lifestyle, how you live, what type of furniture you have,

Speaker:

what type of look that you're looking for.

Speaker:

And she can really consult with you and tell you what type of

Speaker:

roof would be best for really the lifestyle that you live every day.

Speaker:

And.

Speaker:

You know, like a home that you wanna leave, you know, for your children

Speaker:

home, that you wanna sell, whatever your goals are for that home.

Speaker:

I think that, you know, having a custom installed roof that's, you know, in tune

Speaker:

with everything else that's happening on the inside of your home will just

Speaker:

bring so much joy and happiness.

Speaker:

So thank you so much for sharing that Laura.

Speaker:

. Is there anything else that really stands out to you when it comes to, you

Speaker:

know, river Oaks homes in terms of like the style or any, trends that you've

Speaker:

been seeing on, you know, any of the TV shows that, that you wanna maybe

Speaker:

talk about that can be aligned with like, even putting that into like the

Speaker:

thought process when they're picking.

Speaker:

What type of roof that they want?

Speaker:

Well, one thing I just really wanted to close with, that's very important

Speaker:

for everyone listening, especially locally is that, you know, we have

Speaker:

a showroom that all of the river Oaks clients are more than welcome.

Speaker:

Five days a week to walk into, and this solely is made to, so let me backtrack.

Speaker:

We.

Speaker:

Always tie.

Speaker:

We always wanna keep the consumer mentality.

Speaker:

I say this almost in every podcast episode, but we really do.

Speaker:

We always are learning and trying to tweak things and advance the way

Speaker:

that we, you know, not sell roofs, but, you know, actually educate our

Speaker:

clients and give them the things that they're actually looking for.

Speaker:

And that they're not even aware.

Speaker:

They can get.

Speaker:

And so a showroom for a roofing company isn't really heard of, you

Speaker:

can walk in, you know, to some retail spaces and they've got some samples,

Speaker:

but this is a full on showroom.

Speaker:

There are mockups that are about eight or nine feet by four feet of homes.

Speaker:

So on these homes, Are gonna be these luxury installs, the Spanish

Speaker:

barrel tile will be on there.

Speaker:

The Cedar shake, the slate, the metal standing scene metal shingles, all

Speaker:

of these, some of our coding systems.

Speaker:

And because whenever you're trying to really help the owner visualize with

Speaker:

wording and pictures of other people's homes and stuff, it is a little harder,

Speaker:

you know, 3d renderings you can do of people's homes, where you can kind of

Speaker:

get an idea of like a 3d model digitally.

Speaker:

It's not very advanced.

Speaker:

It gives you a better idea than a flat sample, but to fast forward,

Speaker:

we wanna touch on all the senses.

Speaker:

And I know as a consumer, that's a selling point for me is if I can see

Speaker:

it, feel it, touch it, talk about it.

Speaker:

And then I'm sold because it's already something that I was wanting.

Speaker:

So you get to come in.

Speaker:

To the showroom, walk around these already installed roofs with the system

Speaker:

that you're looking for and look at it, feel it, we get to walk you through

Speaker:

the process of all of the different layers that are gonna go into it.

Speaker:

The different construction, what the quote details line.

Speaker:

That's probably two pages long actually means visually.

Speaker:

Joel and I.

Speaker:

Are so happy to bring this to river Oaks and all of the villages

Speaker:

surrounding our new showroom.

Speaker:

And it is preferably by appointment.

Speaker:

But just so we can keep everybody in line and give you enough time

Speaker:

to look over the models, actual mockups of homes with these luxury.

Speaker:

Installs.

Speaker:

So you'll have a about nine foot by four foot mock up of an actual home

Speaker:

that will have the Spanish barrel tile, the Cedar shake, the slate

Speaker:

metal standing seam metal shingles.

Speaker:

Some of our coatings, if anybody's interested in commercial work or have

Speaker:

a flat roof in river Oaks, which they do, you can actually come in, see

Speaker:

touch, feel, touch on all the sense.

Speaker:

And really get a better idea of what you're investing in.

Speaker:

And as we, you know, are going to talk about it's emotionally driven, I think

Speaker:

because it is such a big investment, it does express who you are, you

Speaker:

know, your personality, it's so crazy.

Speaker:

You can put your personality on a roof.

Speaker:

You know, it's just a really cool thing with these luxury items.

Speaker:

And then you're going to spend a while doing your research

Speaker:

and saving up and going through the big construction process.

Speaker:

And we wanna make that, you know, a little more comforting to you and assure you that

Speaker:

this is the right decision for you and give you everything on a silver platter

Speaker:

and let you pick and really have the best idea of what's gonna be good for you.

Speaker:
